Art Talk: Nye Ffarrabas and Mark Waskow

  • Brattleboro Museum and Art Center 10 Vernon Street Brattleboro, VT, 05301 United States (map)

Join artist Nye Ffarrabas and curator Mark Waskow for a discussion of Ffarrabas’s BMAC exhibition, Truth IS A Verb!.

Nye Ffarrabas with her mobius strip event score balanced on her head.

Formerly known as Bici Hendricks Forbes, Ffarrabas began creating art almost as soon as she was conscious, and she became a public-facing artist at a particular time and place—the early and mid-1960s in New York City. At that time, New York was the epicenter of the experimental and creative laboratory known as Fluxus, which became one of the major postmodernist art communities. Fluxus encouraged the view that life and art were inseparable, and often one and the same. Art was not an end-product—an object—but rather a creative energy and process. Ffarrabas was a frequent contributor to this heady soup, yet her work is still being discovered by many. Truth IS A Verb includes text-based works on paper—cards, letters, instructions, books—as well as three-dimensional objects.

Mark Waskow is an independent curator, collector, and public speaker. In 1998, he became involved with the South End Art Hop in Burlington, Vermont, sparking a passion for the visual arts. He began devoting himself to creating a world-class collection of visual art and embarked on what would become decades of extensive work with Burlington’s Northern New England Museum of Contemporary Art (NNEMoCA), to support and expand its collections and reference library. He has also collaborated with artists and provided materials from his own collections to create cutting-edge installations, as well as curated exhibitions from his collections.
