folk art from Tottori Japan
December 18 2010 – January 28, 2011 in Brattleboro, C X Silver Gallery hosts an Asian Cultural Center of Vermont (ACCVT) sponsored exhibition, ‘Mingei of Tottori: Contemporary Folk Art from Tottori Prefecture, Japan.’ This show is touring Vermont, having been previously at Middlebury College, and continuing to University of Vermont, Burlington, in February. This touring exhibition showcases the regional crafts of Tottori, such as handmade Japanese paper, kasuri (indigo-dyed fabrics), ceramics, and folk toys. Even objects of everyday life, used on an ordinary basis, are works of art. There is a long aesthetic tradition in Japan that continues actively today: the beauty of utility. Not just for display, the value of everyday crafted objects shines through their actual use. This is the folk craft (Mingei) perspective. This exhibition is thanks especially to the Japan America Society of Vermont and the Tottori Prefectural Government.
